Global warming is the perfect vehicle for those who wish to accomplish their own forms of social engineering. Why? Because everything causes global warming and global warming causes everything. That's why you get articles in respected news outlets like The Times that proclaim "Planet feels heat of divorce". A quick read of the article will reveal that like most such propagandist attempts at journalism, the United States is quickly found to be the largest perpetrator of whatever it is that they are decrying - whether it is the consumption of meat and oil or the divorce rate.
The premise is based on a study done at Michigan State University that found that divorce creates double households, that is, one for each former partner and that this causes electricity usage to increase by 53%. Therefore, divorce can now be listed as another major contributor to global warming and the destruction of the planet. Lay another guilt trip on the couple who already worry about disappointing each other, their children and their families by making the difficult decision to separate. Let's blame them for the destruction of the planet as well.
But take heart, divorced persons are not the main perpetrators of profligate resource usage. The study found that single-person households were the most wasteful when it came to energy resources and their impact on the environment.
What shall we then do? Tax single people? Institute a divorce tax? Why not rescind the laws against polygamy? Polygamy combines many households into one and therefore could save billions of kilowatts of energy per year - and there is no more extended family than one with several wives and dozens of children.
Perhaps it's time we all grabbed a big handful of salt so that we can take a grain or two when we try to digest the latest global warming news and scare propaganda. Remember the words of H.L. Mencken:
"The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it."
