I believe all viewing during games should be family friendly. After all, how often do family members watch the game together? Children learn the love of the game early by spending time with parents watching games and going to games. Evidently David Smith, a conservative leader agrees with me. In a article by Ed Thomas for OneNewsNow.com, he says that Smith is talking to the Commissioner (Goodel) to convince him to talk to networks about their commercials and promotions during the games.
Many parents are tired of having to keep the remote control handy during games to keep their children from seeing inappropriate content during breaks. Smith says that some of the commercials are "sexually suggestive and inappropriate for family viewing." He says others, especially movie trailers, are "graphically violent and quite disturbing, image wise." Having watched a game or two in my day, I can concur with his assessment. The commercials are not appropriate for children, and need to be reevaluated.
Since the NFL licenses the games to the networks, they do have some control over what is shown during their breaks. Smith and I both hope his letter will have an effect. NFL and other sports games should be kept family friendly so that parents and children can watch the game together without worrying about their children seeing or hearing inappropriate material. The league has a choice and the networks have a choice. They decide what commercials and other things are played during the games, so when we see content that is inappropriate, we can know who made the choice to air it.
If parents want to see clean TV during the games, they need to let their voice be heard by contacting the NFL and/or the networks to air their views. We do have the power, and the responsibility, to make a difference when it comes to what our children are exposed to. In light of the downfall of several NFL heroes' lately, it's even more important to proved wholesome viewing for those in our care. Sports is one of the last bastions of family togetherness viewing and should be protected from those who would introduce adult, graphic, or inappropriate material through the commercials or promotions.

Those who believe that professional sports leagues need to 'clean up' the advertising shown during their broadcasts are simply looking for someone else to blame for their shortcomings as parents. As a parent, it is YOUR responsibility to not only know what your child is watching, but to DISCUSS the subject matter with them if they should enquire or make a comment. If your child is under 13 years old, they may or may not pick up on the 'sexual innuendo' that some of these commericals portray. However, do you really think they have not seen/heard the same or worse at school?
Instead of isolating children from reality, which will undoubtedly lead to some sort of social or emotional issue later on in their life, it's time for parents to take an active role in their child's development and realize that children are PEOPLE. Just like you and me, they have feelings, thoughts, and questions on a wide range of subjects. Would you rather that they learn about these things from their friends & classmates, or from you? Would you rather, when your child is 18, that they have no reservations about coming to speak with you about anything, no matter how embarassing, or again, go to their friends & classmates?
While sports leagues absolutely have a responsibility to screen every commerical that will air during one of their broadcasts, what exactly have they allowed on television that is so horrifying? Janet Jackson's 'wardrobe malfunction' at the Super Bowl a few years back? The most overblown 'incident' I can recall in the past 10 years and one that most likely had other countries laughing hysterically over our reaction to it. Oh my god, a woman's breast & part of her nipple were showing. Cancel the rest of the Super Bowl! The NFL should cease to exist! 99.99999% of women have breasts and nipples (this is not a fact, but something I would assume to be fairly accurate based on my own experiences, where 100% of women have had both). Your children already know what they are, because they have them too! You've already told them what they are! So why the outrage?
I thank my parents everyday for raising my sister & I like they did. Regardless of the problem, regardless of the subject, we've always been able to talk to them about anything that was on our minds without fear of being ridiculed or judged.
It's time for parents to start becoming more then authority figures. It's time for parents to start becoming Mom & Dad instead.
