American amnesia about Britain's bequest of slavery

Many countries suffer a degree of amnesia about slavery, so America would by no means be unique. It is an emotive subject and one which none of those involved now look back on with anything but regret. That said, suggesting or implying that there was something peculiarly 'British' about slavery as an institution or as an economic activity risks pushing reasoned argument beyond what is sustainable.
