National parks: Why Crater Lake is so blue

People who visit Crater Lake National Park and who view the lake from above are often astonished at the deep blue color of the lake. It has the color often attributed to a blue sapphire. Even at the lake's surface, the water is intensely colored. Many people have wondered why the lake has such a deep blue color.
The answer is a combination of how the lake formed, the clarity of the water and science.
