Post-polio Syndrome (PPS) is a syndrome that effects 125,000 of the 500,000 people in this country who have survived acute poliomyelitis. Poliovirus attacks neurons in the brainstem and the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord. Surviving neurons try to compensate by sprouting new nerves to the muscle fibers.
